Huawei shared Ren Zhengfei's first remarks since the inauguration, saying that the US remains a beacon to be emulated and noting staff had 'voluntarily' taken demotions to help the company survive.

Interesting timing to release this old writing from Ren on the day of Honor’s first product launch after reincarnation

WeChat doesn’t listen to user chats and is weighing up a privacy-first input tool. Why ads appear after you say something on WeChat? “The info gets processed by other channels too.” Can’t believe Allen Zhang said this. The official transcript of his talk removed this point.

240 million people have used WeChat credit score, which is, again, not meant for consumer finance. It’s more like a loyalty program, waives your deposits at merchants like Ant’s Sesame Score.

Takeaways from yesterday’s WeChat developer conference:

WeChat mini programs / lite apps are driving a lot of transactions, $250b last year. Pinduoduo quarterly GMV in Q3 was $215b.

The migration from WhatsApp to @signalapp and @telegram also seems to be playing out in China, tho on a much smaller scale. Growing bigger also means more attention and restriction from the authorities, and potential app removal by Apple.

Stimulating interview with Huang Yasheng, one of my favourite China minds and expert on the fin relationship. He argues that Wall Street, far from helping China reform its financial system, is propping up and polishing the state-led model. Worth a read:

Here are (some) steps founders can take to get reporters to write about their companies (a thread). (Caveat: this thread is not exhaustive and really applies only to me)

Just been reminded that Xiami's utopian founders originally named the app EMUMO aka "earn music & money"...

Rumor has it Xiami虾米 is shuttering. I began using it in 2008 and had to give up in 2017 when it lost a ton of music rights despite having been acquired by Alibaba. I still think it's the best music app ever made in China, from UI, community to discovery

It's official. Alibaba says Xiami's music streaming app is closing today.

Now, Livox itself is a mystic company supposedly ‘incubated’ by DJI as an ‘independent’ company. But a source told me it’s just a team within DJI billed as a separate entity. The distancing possibly stems from fears of US scrutiny. DJI was recently added to the entity list.

Thought I was just looking at some regular company partnership but it turned out to encapsulate some of the complexities in the US China tech war.

Xpeng has been accused by @elonmusk of alleged IP theft. The use of lidar actually signifies its deviation from @Tesla, which advocates the use of cameras and neural networks rather than the “fool’s errand.”

This year I discuss China's institutional strengths as well as its growing repressiveness; technology as a means to avoid decadence & complacency; Proust; the party's main theory journal; biking in Beijing; a culinary ranking; and more.

TikTok parent ByteDance hiring for AI drug discovery team by @ritacyliao

This is not a surprise given ByteDance has been trying to diversify. Baidu, Tencent and Huawei have all dabbled in AI assisted drug discovery and other health-related fields.

Asia’s casino capital Macau to host a CES alternative in 2021

“I think Hong Kong and Macau are the only ones that could host a very international and neutral event that people would like to join and won’t feel like that’s a very government event.”

Pretty amazing that the Central Economic Work Conference, which concluded on Friday, lists science and technology work as the top priority for 2021. @ZichenWanghere notes that that sci-tech was never broken out before, much less take first spot.
